Proof of Concept (PoC) of Himachal Pradesh Smart Agriculture Project,
Indo-Japanese Knowledge Centre-cum- Model Vegetable Farm, Bairtee, Solan
Himachal Pradesh Smart Agriculture Project is being implemented at Vegetable Development Station (VDS), Bairtee, District Solan under the Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion Project (HPCDP-II), supported by JICA-ODA. Mr. TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India inaugurated the India-Japan Knowledge Centre-cum-Model Agriculture Farm at Bairtee, Solan, on June 9, 2026, during the commencement of three-day visit of the JICA-India Mission to the HPCDP-II.
The delegation comprised Mr. SHIKOIDE Sota and Ms. IWAMOTO Taiko, Senior Representatives of JICA India, along with Ms. Nishtha Vengurlekar, Development Specialist, JICA India.
The visit of the Mission was coordinated by Project Director Dr. Sunil Chauhan.
The initiative aims to demonstrate advanced Japanese smart agriculture technologies for promoting climate-resilient, resource-efficient and high-value agricultural production systems in Himachal Pradesh.
The project addresses emerging challenges such as climate variability, frost, low temperatures, high humidity and erratic weather conditions that affect agricultural productivity and farmers’ incomes. It seeks to establish a scalable and replicable model for sustainable vegetable cultivation through the adoption of innovative technologies and modern production practices.
Implemented under an Indo-Japanese collaboration involving JICA, HPCDP Phase-II, M2Labo Bharat Pvt. Ltd., Synergy Technofin, HiMedia Laboratories and SEIWA, Japan, the project showcases advanced technologies including:
- Japanese–Indian Hybrid High-Tech Polyhouse
- Hanging-Bed Hydroponic Cultivation System
- Automated Climate-Control Technologies
- Automated Shade-Net and Side Curtain Systems
- LoRaWAN-Based Smart Monitoring System
- Tsuzuku Soil Improvement Technology
- Demonstration of Japanese Vegetable Varieties
Developed as a demonstration and learning platform as a knowledge center on eco-friendly smart agriculture technologies, the project supports technology validation, farmers training and knowledge dissemination.
The initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of climate-smart agriculture, improve resource-use efficiency and enhance the productivity and profitability of high-value crops across the State for the upliftment of the socio-economic status of the farmers and strengthening the rural economy.
